Caring for a Verbally Abusive Parent

Judie Rappaport
October 28, 2014

Dear Judie,

My mother was unhappy and difficult forty years before she entered a nursing home—now she can be downright unbearable. Some days her verbal abuse is so strong, I get acid indigestion and my head aches. How would you categorize a daughter who schedules a 3-hour visit with her mom and then leaves after only an hour?

- Pat, Ft. Pierce

Dear Pat,

We would categorize you as a caring daughter who combines responsibility and compassion to do the best she can, but is wise enough to not accept abuse when she has better options. No one has the right to ask more of you. You may feel better if you schedule shorter visits and occasionally opt to stay longer.
