Act Quickly When There Are Problems with Hired Caregivers

Dear Judie,

Mom’s (92) wonderful caregiver, Marie, helps her with just about everything from walking to getting out bed, to using the toilet—all without problems. Barbara, the relief caregiver the agency sends on Marie’s day off has had two incidents in two weeks where Mom “got away from her” and bruised her foot and suffered a small wound.  I’m worried that two incidents in a short time is a warning that the aide isn’t well trained.  How can I determine what’s really happening?

Dear Eileen,

Ask Marie if she’s had similar experiences.  If she has, Mom may need additional assistance. If Marie has not encountered the same problems, call the agency to replace the relief caregiver with a more skilled professional. Act quickly before Mom has a serious fall.
