Deciding Whether or Not to Travel With an Alzheimer's Patient

Judie Rappaport
November 13, 2014

Dear Judie,

My daughter is marrying a Canadian man. His family has invited us to several parties (in Canada) in their honor. Dad has Alzheimer’s and often acts inappropriately. We’re divided over whether to take him (from assisted living) to Canada for the festivities.

- Hal, Ft. Pierce

Dear Hal,

You may be wise to leave dad here. The travel, strangers, and unfamiliar surroundings will disorient him further. Be certain the community has an emergency contact while you’re gone.
