Mom (87) has Alzheimer’s; Dad (88) had a stroke in December. They both moved into a community where Dad lives in assisted living and Mom resides in the Alzheimer’s wing. Dad complains constantly that the community isn’t providing the services they promised. I want to help but I don’t know where to start.

Families often misunderstand the extent of services provided by assisted living and Alzheimer’s communities. Review your parents’ contract and compare it to Dad’s complaints. Make an appointment with the administrator and/or patient advocate to resolve Dad’s complaints and make certain the community is living up to its obligations. If you aren’t satisfied with the community’s responses, contact Florida Long Term Care Ombudsman Council, (772) 595-1385. This office serves Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, & Okeechobee.
