I know Mom’s (78) in trouble: she sleeps most of the day, is losing weight, she’s forgetful, and has no interest in her favorite pastimes or friends. Dad keeps saying, “Leave her alone. Older people need more rest”. Should I stop worrying?

No, get involved—78 is no longer considered “old age.” Mom’s weight loss, withdrawal from activities and forgetfulness signify illness, not normal aging. Dad may fear a diagnosis or might already have one and want to shield you. Either way, Mom needs medical attention immediately.
