Embracing Your Father's New Marriage

Judie Rappaport
September 23, 2014

Dear Judie,

My 82 year old father is marrying a wonderful woman who is great to me and my kids. One minute I'm happy for him, the next minute I'm angry that my kids will have to share him with her kids and grandkids. Please help.

Dear Dreadful,

Give yourself credit for being smart enough to acknowledge your feelings and conflicting emotions. Try to accept that this is not about you. It’s about your father’s opportunity for a fuller life. His need for a partner doesn’t mean he no longer needs you or your children. In fact, it sounds like they both want to share their love with you. If this continues to be too great an obstacle to climb, consider the high price of your negative emotions and talk to a counselor or your clergy to help sort out your feelings. For now, reassure your father that your reluctance doesn’t mean you don’t love him or want him to enjoy his life—you just need time to adjust. Good luck!
