Make Peace with the Hairpiece

Judie Rappaport
March 17, 2015

Dear Judie,

My wonderful Dad’s (85) been heartbreakingly lonely since Mom died eight years ago.  Early this year, he met Rebecca (78), a lovely woman who fit into our family as though she’d been here for decades—until now.  She just talked Dad into buying a hairpiece for his bald head.  It’s awful. The entire family talks about how ridiculous he looks.  We’re embarrassed to be seen with him but Rebecca keeps telling him how handsome and young he looks.  How can we get rid of the hairpiece without hurting him?

- Paula, Hobe Sound

Dear Paula,

Make peace with the hairpiece.  Baldness is a sensitive issue—doubly sensitive for Dad’s because Rebecca is involved.  Time for your family to recognize a bad hairpiece can’t hold a candle to Dad’s happiness.
